4 important things you should look for in a job advertisement

How do you know if the job advertisement that reads perfectly, is the perfect position for you?

There are a bunch of job advertisements appearing on your feed everyday. Many people feel confused to apply for jobs that vaguely match what they are looking for. This can waste your time and effort in finding more suitable positions.

Here are 4 essential things you should look for in a job post before making any decisions.

Is there an opportunity to grow?

Whatever stage you are in your career, you want to find a position that, as well as using your skills will challenge you to learn more, and to grow in the role.

The job advertisement may mention ‘opportunity for growth’, but it will be better if the job ads showcase more in detail about how they can help you to grow. For example, do they mention internal team workshops, training and coaching etc?

Are they offering a competitive salary package?

Some job descriptions may not provide a salary range, although it is becoming more common to share the salary in their job ads. Based on your prior experience and industry knowledge, you need to set your own salary expectation so that you can consider if the salary offered is appropriate.

If the salary range is not provided, you can ask for this and other benefits prior to replying to the job ads.

*A lot of companies use these terms to describe the salary "from AUD 500 to AUD 1000, up to AUD 1000." Make sure to ask the recruiters to clarify the specific pay rate before you accept the job.

What benefits are included?

There are varied benefits that companies offer around health, social and recreation, not all of these may be important to you. One area that has become an expectation for many employees is work-life balance, such as flexible work hours, a shorter working week or work from home set up.

Some benefits may be mentioned in the job advertisement, and you might be able to search for others on the website.

Culture and Values Fit

It’s likely that you already have a fair idea of the types of companies you would like to work for, or possibly a preference for the industries you would prefer to work in. The company you will enjoy working for most, will be one that has similar values to you. That is, a culture or work environment and management style that matches how you like to live your life

Look for the “Our Culture" session - which is also used the most to promote in recent job advertisements. Each company has its unique culture, so make sure to find the one that fits you for long-term work!
