Leadership - Sharesource

Scouting and Sharesource have much in common

I have always felt that helping others is one of the best ways of meeting new people and bringing value to your own life. For me, Scouting is the way I do this in my personal life, and what I truly love is how Sharesource has supported this important part of my life.

I was in high school when I first joined the Scouts, which was mandatory in my school, but I am grateful that I joined as I loved it immediately and have never looked back. I am now involved in the Rover section of the Scouts (college age and older) and am also a Scout leader and this has become how I do my part in improving the world around me.

I joined a three-day Rover Congress in October 2022 where Rovers from across the Philippines gathered to discuss the 17 sustainable UN development goals. It was amazing to be involved in this as goals around community service and social impact are very relevant to what Scouting believes in, what I believe in, and what is also important to Sharesource.

One of the 17 sustainable development goals is mental health, and this is something that is really very important to me as I know that good mental health is critical to overall well being. It is also something that I have found that Sharesource really supports too.

When I was looking for my future career, I knew I wanted to work in an organisation that shared my values and social goals, so working here was an easy decision. I get to combine my love of helping others and seeing people’s situations grow with a job that enables me to have a social impact on the staff and the community around us. When I wanted to go to the Rover Congress, my manager and the team were very supportive and encouraging. At every level, I feel that I am always supported in my love of Scouting and my desire to help others.

For example, when I went to Australia in 2019, Brendon, the Founder and CEO of Sharesource, reached out to the Australian Scouting movement on my behalf to help me to connect with them. It was such a highlight of my trip.

Sometimes you don’t realise the impact you are going to have on the world around you until much later. One of the activities I truly enjoyed was being involved in Rover Moot’s mangrove tree planting project in 2012 near a village that ended up being hit by a typhoon. The mangroves helped during a strong storm surge in 2020 that protected the properties and people in the immediate vicinity from damage.

Like Scouting globally, there are many great things that Sharesource is working on to support the local community both socially and environmentally that people may not be aware of. For me, in my role in Scouts and at Sharesource, I get great joy seeing new people coming into both organisations and watching them express themselves in ways they help others and make their impact on the world.

Hearing Kaye’s experience as a Rover made us wonder how many others in Sharesource or in our partner organisations globally were also involved in Scouting. So, we thought this provided an opportunity to ‘shout out’ to fellow Scouts and Scouters to get in touch through us, or directly to Kaye, to say Hi, and to share their stories. You never know, maybe we could establish a Sharesource Scouting Group.
